The soul is stung

So the heart throws on black Kente cloth
A cold coaltared ahenema
Donning red scarfs that shroud a fallen back.
Those days are sad.

Footnote:

1. Kente – a traditional woven cloth used especially during festivals and other highly symbolic occasions.

2. Ahenema – a traditional Ghanaian slipper often worn by chiefs, queen mothers, and other traditional authorities during festivals. It is also worn by normal citizens and can be spotted at occasions like funerals. It is worn alone or in the company of other traditional clothing like the Kente.

PS: Yesterday, one of my favourite people in the world I’d never met yet and now will never meet on this side of life went home. This piece is on here today because of him, Nabeel Qureshi. Also, my prayer is with anyone who’s mourning a dear one, dealing with tough days right now. You aren’t alone.
